Berlioz distilled the essence of Shakespeare’s comedy Much Ado about Nothing in the overture to his opera, Béatrice et Bénédict, which opens our May concert under the baton of Adrian Brown. Mathieu van Bellen will perform Britten’s rarely heard violin concerto before the evening is completed with Brahms’s third Symphony – proclaimed by Hans Richter, who conducted the premiere, as ‘Brahms’s Eroica’.
