Jason Lai

A cellist, pianist and composer by training, Jason Lai was Assistant Conductor to the BBC Philharmonic 2002-05 as the winner of the BBC Young Conductors Workshop. During his successful tenure with the Philharmonic he made his Proms debut and conducted most of the other BBC ensembles including the BBC Symphony, BBC Concert Orchestra and BBC Singers.

Conducting engagements have taken him all over the world, most notably in Asia, where he is the newly appointed Associate Artist to the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. He has worked with numerous orchestras including the Royal Philharmonic, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie and will make his English Chamber Orchestra debut this summer. Other future engagements include return visits to the Ulster Orchestra, Taipei Symphony Orchestra and the New Bristol Sinfonia. Jason is also a keen educator and will be course director for Aldeburgh Young Musicians in May this year.

In addition to his conducting Jason is a broadcaster and you may have seen him mentoring Sue Perkins on BBC 2's Maestro which they went on to win; he was also a judge on BBC 2's classical talent show Classical Star and a panellist on the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition. He is currently working as a mentor on Clash, a new music show for CBBC, which will be shown later this year.
