Julian Gallant, piano

Julian Gallant read music at Oxford University and subsequently pursued his studies as a pianist in Switzerland with the late Achille Colassis. Since his début recital at St John's Smith Square in 1992 he has performed all over the world and with a number of different ensembles including the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Oxford Philomusica, Moscow Philharmonic and Kiev Chamber Orchestra. Julian Gallant has frequently appeared in the major concert halls of Europe including London's Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room, the Liszt Academy in Budapest and Moscow's prestigious Tchaikovsky Hall. He also visits more remote musical centres, appearing in recital in Central America, Central Asia, the Caucasus and Lebanon. He is soon to perform in Beijing, Lanzhou, Hong Kong and Seoul.

Gallant's recordings include the disc Piano Concertos of Our Time, which features the first Western European recording of Górecki's Piano Concerto together with works by Hindemith, Shostakovich and Malcolm Williamson. In 1998 he released a disc of French music for two pianos which includes a live Moscow performance of Poulenc's Concerto for Two Pianos. He has recorded for radio broadcast in many countries but most frequently with Radio Suisse Romande; Gallant was the first to record the piano music of the late Heinrich Sutermeister.

Julian Gallant is Chief Conductor of the Russian Chamber Orchestra of London. This ensemble took part in the Southwark Festival in October 1999, appeared at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London in February 2000, completed a tour of the North of England in October 2000 and will appear at the Canterbury Festival on 23 October 2000.

Julian Gallant is a Director of the Oxford Philomusica, with special responsibility for the Oxford Philomusica International Piano Festival.
