Mandy Burvill, clarinet
Mandy learned the clarinet in Norwich with the late Stephen Walters, then continued her studies in London with Christopher Ball. While at music college she studied with Keith Puddy and Hale Hambleton. Since leaving college, Mandy has won the Anglo-Czechoslovak Trust Music Competition and the Britten-Pears Concerto Competition.
She has performed concertos at Snape Maltings, St Martin in the Fields, the Purcell Room and St John's, Smith Square with orchestras including the London Soloists Chamber Orchestra, the Salomon Orchestra and the Britten-Pears Orchestra.
In September 1999 she was appointed second clarinet with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
Between 1995 and 1997 Mandy was principal clarinet with the Corinthian Chamber Orchestra.
"Tonight a near capacity audience was privileged to hear Mandy give a commanding and exciting performance of the Copland Concerto. … The opening bars captured the immediate attention of the audience. … The gentle lilt of the waltz was maintained throughout and provided an exciting contrast to the jazzy rhythms and virtuosic passages of the cadenza and final sections. … Her contagious enjoyment and enthusiasm for the piece made this a memorable performance."
