Nick Ridley, oboe
Nick started playing the oboe under the tuition of Susan Peel at Marlborough College in 1984, and continued his studies with Helena Gaunt at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, whilst studying Music at City University in London. After performing the Strauss Oboe Concerto with the University Orchestra, Nick was awarded a scholarship to study for a further year, during which he gained an ARCM in oboe performance.
In 1989, Nick won the Bath Young Musician of the Year competition, and as part of the prize he and his brother Tim gave an oboe and piano recital at the Aix-en-Provence Music Festival in 1991. They still occasionally give performances together, premièring Tim's Oboe Sonata at Marlborough College last summer. In 1993, Nick joined the Apollo Ensemble of Bath as soloist in the world première of Michael Short's Apollo Concerto No 2 for Oboe and Strings.
Nick is at present the principal oboist with Corinthian Chamber Orchestra, the Salomon Orchestra and Chelsea Opera Group, and the Cor Anglais player for Forest Philharmonic and the London Shostakovich Orchestra. By day he works as a software developer in the TV and film industry.
