Richard Knights, trumpet

Born in North East London, Richard moved to Bedford with his family at an early age, where his musical career began with piano lessons at the age of eight. He started learning the trumpet two years later, studying with Adrian King, Michael Lock and Richard Hull. Whilst reading Music at Kingston University, he studied with Colin Clague (Principal Trumpet, English National Opera) and worked in masterclasses with Crispian Steele-Perkins, Paul Archibald and Roger Webster. He graduated in 2001 with an Upper Second Class Bachelor of Music degree with a Commendation for Performance. Since university, Richard has continued his musical career, combining this with working in the finance industry for a leading Insurance Finance company.

He has been privileged to work with conductors such as Sir Charles Mackerras, Alan Hazeldine, Diego Masson, Ilan Volkov and Peter Stark amongst many others, and has performed at all of London's major venues and taken part in several festivals including the BBC Proms. Previously Principal Trumpet of several amateur orchestras in and around London on a regular and guest basis (including Forest Philharmonic Orchestra and Orchestra of the City), he is currently Principal Trumpet of the Corinthian Chamber Orchestra and Ernest Read Symphony Orchestra, as well as working frequently with other ensembles including the Orchestra of St Paul's.

Outside music, Richard enjoys reading books on topics ranging from economics to science fiction. He also enjoys watching team sports, and particularly Rugby Union: he remains a keen supporter of his local rugby club, Bedford Blues RFC.
