Disguised as a man called Fidelio, Leonora sets out to find her imprisoned husband Florestan. Although never the overture to the opera, Leonore Overture No. 3 tells the heroic Fidelio story masterfully and is the popular overture chosen for tonight’s concert. We are very pleased to welcome Vashti Hunter as our soloist to perform the Saint-Saëns concerto with us this evening, a concerto considered by many composers, including Shostakovich and Rachmaninov, as the greatest of all cello concertos. After the interval, Adrian Brown, an inspiring interpreter of Dvořák, will return to conduct Dvořák’s Slavic fifth Symphony and will send you home with some traditional CCO festive musical fare.
